Day Trip Guide to Visiting Beitou and Tamsui in Taiwan!

Hey everyone, here's my guide to visiting Beitou and Tamsui!

These two cities are conveniently close to each other, making them perfect for a day trip where you can explore both locations.

Tamsui holds a special place in my heart as it's where I spent some of my childhood. I have fond memories of this city from my kindergarten days, and I'm excited to share my guide for visiting this charming place with you.

Our adventure began with a visit to Beitou, renowned for its hot springs—a quintessential Taiwanese experience. There are various hot springs to choose from, but we opted for Spring City Resort. Other popular options include Grand View Resort, which offers private bathhouses for a more exclusive experience. These hot spring experiences can cost anywhere from 5 to 50 dollars per person, depending on the one you choose. Since I was visiting with friends and wanted to enjoy an all-gender hot spring experience, I chose Spring City Resort.

Getting to Beitou is a breeze; simply hop on the MRT. I recommend using Google Maps for navigation—it's reliable and easy to follow.

After arriving in Beitou, we took a leisurely walk up to Spring City Resort. From there, we hopped into a taxi and made our way to the famous Wuji Tianyuan Temple, a must-visit landmark in Tamsui.

Exploring Beitou and Tamsui in a day offers a delightful blend of relaxation and cultural immersion. Whether you're soaking in the rejuvenating hot springs or marveling at the temples, this day trip promises unforgettable experiences in Taiwan's charming cities. We visited during the Winter time and actually found the temperature a bit hot, so be warned to dress lightly.

Beitou -

Thermal Valley

Explore the fascinating Thermal Valley, known for its natural hot springs and captivating geological features.Thermal Valley is conveniently located within a short walking distance from the train station, and as soon as you catch a whiff of the distinctive aroma of sulfur, you'll know you're in the right place. The water in the valley boasts a captivating teal hue, emanating warmth from the natural hot spring waters below. Plan for about 20 to 40 minutes to fully immerse yourself in this unique experience. It's worth noting that even in winter, the area can be quite warm, so it's advisable to dress lightly for your visit.

Visit A Hot Spring

Relax and unwind in Beitou's hot springs, where you have plenty of choices like the Beitou Public Hot Springs, Spring City Resort, or Grand View Resort. If you're with a big group, Spring City is a good bet. Grand View is better for couples since you can get your own private hot spring room.

When we tried Spring City, we just walked in and waited about 20 minutes. They give you robes, towels, shower caps, and a locker key. The locker room was a bit cramped, so there was a bit of a wait for showers. After that, you put on your bathing suit and hop into the hot springs. They have different pools with varying temperatures, but it can get crowded, feeling more like a water park. It was 800 NTD per person for us to bathe here.

Grand View Resort, on the other hand, is more chill with private rooms. So, whether you're looking for a social soak or a more intimate experience, Beitou's got you covered.

Wuji Tianyuan Temple

Wuji Tianyuan Temple: Visit the impressive Wuji Tianyuan Temple, especially breathtaking when illuminated at night. It boasts a towering pagoda and serves as a picturesque spot, particularly during cherry blossom season. While entry is free, consider transportation options, such as buses or taxis, as parking can be challenging.

Tamsui Yingzhuan Night Market

Tamsui Yingzhuan Night Market: Experience the vibrant Tamsui Yingzhuan Night Market, located by the waterfront. Explore an array of food stalls, nostalgic games, and unique shops. Make sure to venture closer to the water's edge to fully immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere. My favorite game here was the ring toss. Be sure to get this delicious kakigori at Naniwamaru. The homemade shoe shop was also there when I was a little kid!

Start your walk along the water when you visit this shaved ice spot and you'll find tons of artisan stores along the back area hidden from your view.

Tamsui Old Street

Tamsui Old Street: Wander along Tamsui Old Street, a charming thoroughfare lined with boutique stores and eateries. While it has a touristy vibe, it offers an opportunity to sample local delicacies and browse through quaint shops.

Fisherman’s Wharf

‍While it may not be the most thrilling attraction, taking a stroll across Fisherman’s Wharf is a must-do in Tamsui. The iconic Lover’s Bridge, adorned with colorful lights and musical displays, offers a unique experience as you soak in the waterfront ambiance. Indulge in fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants lining the wharf, though be aware that activities tend to wind down early in the area. Despite its simplicity, Fisherman’s Wharf provides a tranquil setting for a leisurely walk and a delicious meal by the sea.

At the end we took a Taxi back to Taipei but you can take a bus or train!
